
KATIE TAUNTON
Katie is a flautist studying at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), with Kevin
Gowland and Jennifer Hutchinson. Previously, she attended Wells Cathedral School on
their Specialist Music Scheme, under the guidance of Susie Hodder-Williams. At the
RNCM, Katie performs regularly with the colleges most prestigious ensembles. In just
her second year she successfully auditioned for a seat in the Symphony Orchestra
concert at The Bridgewater Hall under the baton of Elim Chan.
Originating from Cardiff, Katie partakes in many Welsh ensembles. As a former member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales, she now plays with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales where she was recently chosen to be part of a mentoring scheme with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Katie has participated in masterclasses with leading flautists such as; Andrea Oliva,
Emily Beynon and Robert Winn. In 2020, she was honoured to receive a scholarship to
attend the Orford Musique Académie, in both the classes of Robert Langevin (Principal flute of the New York Philharmonic) and Michael Cox (Principal Flute of for BBC Symphony Orchestra).
As a chamber musician, Katie enjoys delivering outreach workshops. She is a founding
member of the Quora Flute Quartet; and has received the RNCM Fewkes Chamber Prize and the June Emerson Launchpad Award. Katie is grateful to have received support from the following; The Wells Foundation, The Cherry Tree Foundation and The Welsh Livery Guild.
