RACHAEL WATSON

Rachael is currently in her final year of undergraduate study at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where she studies with Laura Jellicoe (flute) and Janet Richardson (piccolo). During her studies she has been able to explore and exercise all of her interests within music and has taken part in many opportunities, including chamber recitals, performing in masterclasses with renowned flautists such as Michael Cox, Andrea Oliva and Adam Walker, and playing with ensembles such as the RNCM Symphony, Concert and Chamber Orchestras and the RNCM Wind Ensemble.

Born in Aberdeen, Rachael started learning the flute and piano at the age of 9. Having found a passion for orchestral playing she quickly became involved in many performances based in the North-East Scotland area with ensembles of the Aberdeen City Music Service and the Grampian Youth Orchestra. After being awarded the Outstanding Soloist Award at the Scottish Concert Band Festival in 2015, Rachael received scholarship lessons at the North East of Scotland Music School. Wishing to further her musical education, she attended the Aberdeen City Music School for two years, where she received specialist tuition in both flute and piano. In 2017, she began performing annually across venues in Scotland with the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, and has held the position of Principal Flute with their symphony orchestra for the seasons of both 2020 and 2021.

Rachael has a particular enthusiasm for chamber music, and alongside holding the position of co-founder of the award winning ensemble, Quora Flute Quartet, she also performs regularly with other groups, including the wind quintet, Paramount Winds. Furthermore, over her time at the RNCM she has established a love for both Jazz and Contemporary music, taking part in improvisation classes with jazz bassist, Steve Berry, working alongside RNCM composers on various new works and performing with the Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera in collaboration with members of the Vonnegut Collective.

Aside from her solo and ensemble engagements, Rachael aims to share her love of music through teaching and is always looking ahead to new projects in which she can connect and communicate with others through music.
